Musings…

These first months of 2018 find me tightening up concepts and working on pieces for an upcoming solo show at Spark Gallery in September… the current working title is “Branching Out.” I’m also looking forward to showing with fellow collagist Lili Francuz at ReCreative Gallery in December. There’s much to consider as the work progresses and sometimes sends me in slightly different directions than I’d originally anticipated. And that’s also the wonderful, challenging, discovery-filled part of it!

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the philosophical underpinnings of my work. Last night I attended a panel discussion at the Clyfford Still Museum titled “Painting/Non-Painting” featuring artists Stephen Batura, Terry Lee Maker, and Sarah McKenzie. There was a lively discussion about how the act of painting continues to evolve, photography’s use in painting, and just how blurred the boundaries of painting have become — the “elastic nature of painting,” as one of the panelists put it. It made me realize that while I tend to label myself a “collagist,” my working intention/philosophy puts me squarely within the “painter” realm even though I work with bits of photography/color rather than pigments.

While not such an issue for a traditional painter, I’m always wondering how to work bigger and stronger when my raw materials are mostly quite intimate in scale. In some cases, I’ve teamed up with art consultants to enlarge certain collages for installation in corporate or health environments. I love that the dot detail and ripped edges are revealed and yet they still read well from afar. This week it was exciting to see a sampling of the “Daily Mail” collages enlarged to about 3 feet tall and printed on plexiglass for an upcoming corporate installation… note doorknob for scale (below).

I’ve been posting the Daily Mail collages on my Facebook art page in a one-year-later, day-by-day manner and want to put them here too. However, I’ve fallen way behind! Where has April gone?!

I’d, of course, love for you to like my Facebook page if you are in the mood. Then my art posts would show up on your Facebook feed from time to time. Click here to take a look.

Mail ingredients, collaged…

During my Overlooked Artifacts exhibition last fall, I never posted all the Daily Mail images. Here are the images made from mail received one year ago this week. As you’ll see, some days the mail gods were more generous than others :)

It’s been a year?

During all the lead up and busy-ness surrounding my Overlooked Artifacts exhibition last fall, I never posted all the Daily Mail images. Since I made those collages from mail gleaned in March, April and May of last year, I thought I’d share them fully now. Here are the images made from early March’s mail one year ago.

Just one thing in the mailbox… an inauspicious beginning

This is the first collage created for the “Overlooked Archives” show. The only thing that arrived on March 1st, 2013 was a coupon/postcard from Bed, Bath & Beyond. It made me wonder if the concept of working with each day’s mail would provide enough interest and content. My persistence paid off though and the resulting body of work and  show were strong. Thankfully!

I referenced this collage in my artist statement. Most people could imagine where the pieces came from once I pointed it out… there are common elements delivered to all our mailboxes.

On a quieter note…

Views of the “Overlooked Artifacts” exhibition at Spark Gallery on a quiet afternoon… There were 75 original collages, framed with UV glass and archival matting, each 12 x 9″ in size and hung chronologically in a grid. This represented each day’s mail from March, April, and May of 2013.

It’s always great to have company in the gallery, but sometimes I look forward to a lull when I can take it all in, size it up, and think about where my work may be taking me next.

Lots of framing to do…

My next exhibition at Spark Gallery in Denver includes collages made from papers culled from each day’s mail over a three-month period. So I have 70+ small works to frame in the next week or so.

This is always the hardest part of preparing for a show: the detailed and tedious parts of signing, labeling, inventorying, matting, framing (cleaning glass)… I’d much rather be working on new collages, or the commission I have with looming deadline! Ah, well, I’m getting there with the help of a neighborhood teenager’s assistance and the knowledge that it’ll all be worth it when it’s up on the wall. The opening reception is on Friday, October 25th from 6-9pm. Save the date!
