I have always looked at things differently... Since childhood I’ve enjoyed making art, especially creating “something from nothing.” In the course of my design training, and as I art-directed photo sessions, I became more aware of the background imagery’s importance in supporting the subject matter to advantage. I found myself studying all the details in magazine photos and thinking that some were so wonderful that they should be given a second life. I began to save bits and pieces and my collage art evolved from studies that incorporated those found, quite unlikely, scraps –- recycling at its best.
Each collage begins with a premise or simply an evocative piece of paper. Like a puzzle, the composition evolves one piece at a time. A certain amount of serendipity is involved in the process as I search for the next perfect element to add. As the artwork evolves, I continue to cut, crop, rip, or otherwise manipulate possible elements, making decisions about what works and what is needed next to complete the composition. Eventually, the selected elements and layers combine to create fresh imagery that yields new associations and meanings. All the collages are unique and hand made of original source materials.
My work ranges in style from somewhat representational to completely abstract, whimsical to sophisticated. Concepts of movement, fluidity, and compositional tension often influence the work.
